Wrap-up of SEG 2009
[Posted January 18, 2010]

It was another great SEG meeting for the NSGS! There were five technical sessions and one workshop with an emphasis on applications, including engineering, environmental, and hydrogeophysics. Wendy Wempe completed her term as Past-President, and we welcomed the new Executive Committee, lead by President Jan van der Kruk, with President-Elect Klaus Hollinger.

Louise Pellerin of Green Engineering was bestowed the Harold Mooney Award, especially recognizing her service as the NSG voice as Second Vice President on the 2008-2009 SEG Executive Committee. Susan Hubbard of the Earth Science Division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory received the Frank Frischknecht Award. As well, there were three winners of student travel scholarships: Khan Jadoon from Forschungszentrum Juelich, Dylan Mikesell from Boise State University, and Cezar Iacob from the University of Bucharest. Hearty congratulations to all of these award-winners and we look forward to another successful meeting in October 2010 in Denver, Colorado.

Looking Forward to SEG 2009
[Posted May 24, 2009]

The SEG Annual Meeting will be held October 25-30, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas, USA. A near-record number of abstracts were received, ranking the Houston meeting as number two for the most submissions ever received, second only to last year's meeting in Las Vegas.

Thank you to all of the expert reviewers that volunteered to review abstracts in the NGS category. The Technical Program schedule will be finalized in the coming months and authors should expect to receive notification regarding the status of their abstracts in June.

SEG Las Vegas Forum Recap
[Posted May 24, 2009]

In honor of the Near-Surface [Geophysics] Section's 15th anniversary, the 2008 SEG Forum featured a panel of renowned experts - Sheldon Breiner, Ken Albright, William M. Alley, Rodney T. Smith, Rosemary Knight, and David White - who discussed "Managing our Groundwater Resources for the Future". Unlike the oil and gas themes of years past, this forum addressed one of the world's most critical natural resources and the contribution of near-surface geophysics to groundwater management.

President-Elect, Wendy Wempe, Attends SEG Technical Sessions Planning Meeting
[Posted February 25, 2007]

The online program for the SEG 2007 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, will open for abstract submissions on March 14. In preparation, the NSG Section President-Elect, Wendy Wempe, recently traveled to Austin, Texas, for the SEG Technical Session Planning Meeting. In accordance with our charter, as President-Elect, Wendy is in charge of organizing the NSG sessions for this year’s meeting.
The important dates breakdown as follows:

March 14 – online program for abstract submittal opens
April 11 – online program closes
May 21 – session organizing completed

A few tentative session ideas were received from the membership in response to the NSG Section Executive Committee’s recent call for input. Some of the session ideas are:
  1. Mining challenges
  2. Detecting hazards and anomalies
  3. Near-surface seismic characterization and related issues (statics corrections, velocity-depth ambiguity, model validation, etc.)
  4. Multi-method integration
  5. Application of EM methods to groundwater problems
  6. GPR session (latest developments in methods, modeling, etc.)
Once all the abstracts are reviewed, the final session topics will be determined. It will be exciting to see if enough submittals are stimulated by these ideas to flesh out full sessions.

Past-President, Louise Pellerin, Remarks on the SEG 2006 Annual Meeting
[Posted February 25, 2007]

This was a very busy and exciting SEG for me personally and as a representative of the Near-Surface Geophysics Section (NSGS). As president of the NSGS, I was invited to give a presentation at the SEG Executive Committee about possible NSGS activities that the SEG could support. It was very positive and as a result I think we will be seeing a more active NSGS. There was a good variety and interest in the technical sessions, we had a full agenda at our business meeting, and as always, the social was fun visiting with old and new friends and colleagues. Although small relative to the SEG O&G community, there is a real sense of community with the NSGS that I very much enjoy.

I was very glad that the SEG committed to keeping the 2006 annual meeting in New Orleans. The locals seemed very glad to have us there and it was good to see that even though they have a ways to go recovering from Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is still New Orleans!

SEG 2006 Annual Meeting Wrap-up
[Posted November 4, 2006]

The SEG 2006 meeting in New Orleans had an excellent showing of NSG Section members at the annual dinner reception and business meeting, including the three Student Travel Grant winners, Shelby Walters, Cedric Schmelzbach, and Ho Trong Long.

The 2006 Harold Mooney Award was awarded to Bill Doll of Battelle-Oak Ridge Operations. Bill is pictured below with Louise Pellerin, now the NSG Section Past-President. The 2006 Joint EEGS/NSG Section Frank Frischknecht Leadership Award was posthumously awarded to Bob Corwin.

With the closing of the SEG 2006 meeting, there was also a changing of the guard for the NSG Section Executive Committee. We welcome two new members, Wendy Wempe as President-Elect, and Matthew Ludwig as Newsletter Editor. Tom Dobecki and Mike Knoll retired from the committee after four and three years, respectively. Great thanks to Tom and Mike for their service to the NSG Section!
